Chapter 10

“Mama, can Brice stay over tonight? That way we can all wake up together in the morning and you can make us corn fritters and bacon and we can open gifts and be so happy!”

Jeremy had been so happy for the last couple of days that Brice had been at their house helping to wrap gifts, having dinner with them, watching movies and even taking Jeremy to the school play because Lynn had to work late. She’d joined them at the school, only about fifteen minutes late, finding that Jeremy was already backstage dressed in his costume and that Brice saved her a seat in the audience. As she’d looked around, she’d witnessed that she wasn’t the only late parent and that on more occasions than one, the other parent had also saved a seat. It gave her a warm feeling to be a part of that dynamic now, but still she didn’t want to move too fast into this new family idea.

“Ah, I don’t know, Jeremy. Brice may have plans with his family tonight,” she’d answered. In the last few days she’d also noticed that Brice had asked Jeremy to call him by his first name instead of the formal Mr. Wellington. Lynn wasn’t a hundred percent on board with this as she’d taught Jeremy to respect his elders, starting by calling them Mr. or Mrs. But both the males in her life had slipped into the pattern so easily and seemed to thoroughly enjoy it and each other, so she hadn’t wanted to argue too much.

“Do you have other plans?” Jeremy had looked over the dining room table where they’d just had dinner.

It had all seemed so homey, Lynn had to admit. The crimson painted walls and cream colored curtains at her dining room windows added a certain warmth to the cherry oak table that often seemed too big for just her and Jeremy to use—so most times they simply ate at the smaller table in the kitchen. Tonight she’d felt festive and had set the dining room table with its large poinsettia centerpiece. She’d cooked what she’d just recently learned was one of Brice’s favorites—barbeque chicken, macaroni and cheese and green beans. Of course tomorrow’s dinner at her parents’ house would be much more lavish—like a smorgasbord, she corrected in her mind—but she wasn’t sure Brice would be joining them for that either, mainly because she hadn’t asked him.

Brice, who had been wiping his mouth after chewing the last of his second helping, immediately replied, “I have no plans for this evening. My parents are probably at the country club having dinner right this minute. They’ll go home and head straight to bed, then do brunch tomorrow morning with their closest friends.”

“So when do you see them during the holidays?” Lynn asked, because it sounded like Brice spent the bulk of his time alone. She didn’t like that at all and she suspected Jeremy had a quick remedy for that situation.

“Sometimes I’ll swing by the restaurant in the morning to see them, or later in the evening.
